Air Fryer Batata Harra is a healthier version of the traditional middle eastern side dish Batata Harra. Batata Harra is spicy, tangy, and crispy in texture. Fresh cilantro and minced garlic give this potato dish an addictive taste. Vegan and plant-based. Who Doesn’t like Middle Eastern flavors? The robust and earthy flavors of middle eastern spices are my personal favorite. Zatar, Harissa, and Sumac are just so good. I use them in vegetables, salad marinades, soups, and bread. This Spicy, Crispy potato is prevalent in almost every country of the Middle East or the Mediterranean region. They have a little change here and there, but the basic remains the same. In Arabic, it means spicy potato. They are made as a side dish in home kitchens across and on the menus of most restaurants. Here would like to mention that it is pretty similar to our Indian Aloo Bhujia or Potato fry. This dish is primarily present in all Middle Eastern restaurant menus. The basic recipe remains the same other then a few things here and there.
Ingredients used?
Potato - Any potato which holds its shape and has excellent texture that works in this recipe. Minced Garlic- Who doesn’t love garlic? Garlic flavor makes any dish tastes more delicious. Cayenne Pepper- Any other chili pepper will also provide a little spicy hint, but traditionally cayenne is used. Red Pepper Flakes- For spice. Olive oil- Only a little bit since we are air frying. Salt Green fresh Cilantro and Lime Juice- for garnish and tangy flavor.
How to cook?
Peel and wash the potatoes under running cold water for five minutes. This process will ensure the removal of starch hence crisp potatoes. Cut them into small pieces /cubes. Mix oil and a little bit of salt into the potatoes. Line an air fryer liner with parchment paper or store-bought ones. Spread all the potatoes in one layer. Depending on your air fryer, you may need to do this in two batches. Do not overcrowd them. Air fry the potatoes at 350 f for 8-9 minutes. They should be golden and crispy. Stir them in between with the help of a wooden spatula. Whisk tomato paste, chili powder, flakes, salt, and minced garlic together. Mix them with potatoes . Please make sure they are perfectly coated with them. Air fry them again for 4-5 minutes or till they look crispy. Turn them around a few times. Sprinkle lime juice and mix fresh cilantro with the potatoes. Enjoy it with your friends and family. Note- Time can vary depending on your potato cubes and air fryer. Turn them around in between and check often.
How to serve?
I make batata harra as a weekend breakfast and serve it with my shakshuka and crusty bread. You can do it with a mezze platter or as a filling for a veg sandwich. I love to sprinkle some cheese and have this with my tacos too.
How to cook on the stovetop in a pan?
Deep or shallow fry the potatoes and place them on a paper towel-lined plate. Heat a pan with one tbsp of oil, and add the minced garlic. Add tomato paste, salt, and cayenne pepper/chili pepper when it looks golden caramelized, and mix everything together to coat perfectly. Now add fresh chopped cilantro and sprinkle some lime juice. Enjoy.
