Makhana Kheer, or Foxnut Pudding, is a Creamy, milk-based pudding that combines golden roasted fox nuts with lots of whole milk. Mawa and many dry fruits give it a decadent taste and rich flavor. Many people consider it Vrat food.
What is Makhana?
Makhana /Phool Makhana or Fox nuts are popularly known as lotus seeds. They are widespread in Bihar, so growing up, we had many delights of Makhana. I remember we usually had so much makhana at home that my Mom stored them in big, stolen containers. So when I bought them in GMS for the first time, I felt weird. They are readily available in Indian stores here in the US. They are a powerhouse of energy, and they contain many vitamins and minerals. They are delicious in any form and healthy, too.

Health Benefits of Makhana,
Makhana or Foxnuts are excellent potassium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, and zinc sources. They are a superfood, hence great for snacking. Sweet or savory, in any form, they are just delicious.
Ingredients Needed to make Makhana Kheer?
Mawa Milk Powder is readily available in Indian grocery stores in the USA. You can also use grated khoa or Mawa for this recipe. Whole Milk—I always use A2 Milk in my kitchen. It is free of hormones and has a better taste. Sugar- Any granular sugar is good, though I would like to use Costco’s organic cane sugar. Ghee- To roast the fox nuts. It gives a lovely aroma and great texture to the Makhana. Dry Fruits- I have used slivered almonds, pistachios, and raisins for this recipe. Green Cardamom is used for flavor, and dry rose petals are used for garnish. Saffron-Any good quality saffron will work. Again, amazon or Indian grocery stores.
